PORTRAITS By CHARLES  MARGESON

I use three mediums: OIL, WATERCOLOUR AND PASTEL.  Oils take longer than the other two mediums, Watercolor dries more quickly and Pastel of course is always dry. The time frame in the completion of a portrait varies depending on a variety of factors such as medium, size, and style.

The materials used are very high quality.  The client and the artist usually determine framing of a portrait. I paint portraits of people, pets, and boats.  Often people want a portrait of a child that they love, a pet that they love or someone special such as a wife or husband. Sometimes a loved one who is no longer with them, a company CEO, or even a boat for that matter, may be the subject of a portrait.

Many times people want a portrait to look like a photograph but they must remember that a painting whether a portrait or landscape is a work of art that includes the interpretation of the artist.  This is what makes the choice of the artist important.  I am a representational artist.  This differs from a cubist, an abstractionist, or a photorealist.  Many of my portraits are of the informal type, such as the oil portraits of ‘Vic’ and ‘Spencer’.  The watercolor of ‘Sasho’ and ‘Holly’ are informal as well.  The oil portrait of ‘Austin’ is formal. Whether formal or informal, I try to show the character of the subject as much as possible. This is also true of the animal portraits.

The price of my portraits is determined by several factors, such as size, the medium to be used, and the amount of the body to be painted.  For example, the usual is head and shoulders, but at times people want a more extensive picture of full length etc and the formal portrait is more expensive.  All portrait commissions are by contract.
